What is a Gasser?
A 'Gasser' is the term used in the late 1950's through the 1960's for a vehicle that drag raced simply on gas as fuel (rather than a race fuel) and competed in a heads up drag race in which classes were seperated by engine cubic inches and vehicle weight. As the 'gasser' developed modifications to the suspension and wheelbase started to appear. Most notably a 'straight-axle' front suspension became standard in the faster classes. This imtimidating stance served a functional purpose during drag racings early years......to provide rear weight transfer as a drag race starting line advantage. Such classic 'doorslammers' were known to be the first type of drag race car to gain company sponsorship. The Gassers became fan favorites as big name racers often ran grudge matches for crowd entertainment. Gassers and Fuel Altered cars were the top drag racing classes prior to Top Fuel Dragsters, Funny Cars, and Pro Stock. The "Gasser War' years are defined as 1955-1968 when they ruled drag strips across the country.
American Gasser has re-created period correct Gassers which are street legal as well as drag strip ready for those who desire to re-live the Glory Days of the Gasser.
Classic Willys Gasser
American Gasser has captured every detail to provide a period perfect 1933 and 1940/1941 Willys gasser. The hand crafted frame rails are the foundation of the chassis. The body is 4 layer hand laid fiberglass with core mat used in larger sections and reinforced internally with steel. The Willys coupe is designed with external door hinges as a standard configuration and is produced with both a single tilt front end as well as a 4-piece front end with opening hood. We offer both the 1940 Willys grille or the 2-piece 1941 Willys grille.
Every Gasser chassis includes:
- Boxed 2 x 4 frame rails (2 x 3 on the 1933) - includes rollbar and seat bracket mounts
- Steel Reinforced Body
- Front Straight Axle from "Straight", 4 inch, 6 inch drop configurations
- Parallel Leaf Front Suspension
- Ladder Bar Rear Suspension with Coil Over Shocks
- Ford 9 inch rear end
