OUR HISTORY

From an early age John Shelton, founder of American Gasser, was introduced to the hot rod world. John’s father, also John Shelton, raised his son on all facets of car performance including drag and circle track racing, engine building, restoration, and collecting. He stood firm in his belief that a low risk career was the best way to provide for his family, thus he spent his entire career as a corporate engineer for Mobile Oil. “Work you career, enjoy your hobby, and raise your family” he often said. His hobby and lifelong dream was a career in the hot rod world, a dream he then passed on to his son.  Late in his life, John Sr. began advising his son to pursue his dreams and ambitions. John Sr. passed away prior to reaching his retirement years and fully enjoying the fruits of his labor and his true passion for hot rods.

It didn't take long for John Jr. to take his father’s advice and in 2008 American Gasser was born. What started as a grass roots hobby quickly expanded into a full-fledged industry. Work began building hot rods or in this case “Gassers”, the onetime legend of the drag strip now returned to popularity through the nostalgic drag racing series. John teamed with another individual who dedicated several years to reproducing the 1940/1941 Willys Coupe Gasser and successfully launched the vehicle but had no desire in building them on a production basis. He quickly learned the art behind the custom builds and as opportunity knocked he was able to launch a successful business offering these one off vehicles to the public.

Today American Gasser has proudly produced cars throughout the United States and has added additional models to its’ product line. They have also recently announced a relocation to Saginaw, Michigan. The move allows them to increase production utilizing a larger shop space and the addition of a formal showroom which is slated to open in early 2014.
